Now, not everyone is going to hit seven figures with affiliate marketing. Reaching that level requires deep knowledge, real skills, capital, and a solid risk appetite. But you don’t need to aim that high right away. For most people, affiliate marketing can simply be a way to boost their income.

If you’re a beginner, I don’t recommend jumping into the merchant role just yet. It’s more suitable for experienced marketers who already know the game. For them, launching a product can be relatively easy.

Affiliate – Also Known as the Publisher

As an affiliate (or “publisher,” as some platforms call it), you operate much like an independent business owner. You promote products from other companies and earn a commission for each sale you help generate.

There are many ways to do this: you can write blog posts, publish product reviews, create YouTube videos, grow an Instagram page, sell through Facebook, or even run paid ads to drive high volumes of sales.

Some affiliates are making tens of thousands of dollars per day. Every year, major affiliate marketing conferences take place around the world, bringing together some of the smartest minds in the industry.

In exchange for facilitating this connection, the affiliate network takes a small cut of the revenue as a middleman.

When starting out, I recommend joining well-established and reputable affiliate networks. Why? Because trust matters. Big names like ClickBank, Commission Junction (CJ), Amazon Associates, and MaxBounty are solid starting points.

Once you’re accepted into a network, they’ll give you access to dozens — sometimes hundreds — of offers to choose from. You can start promoting immediately, and most networks pay you on a regular schedule. I even know networks that pay daily — which is incredibly helpful when you’re trying to manage cash flow and scale ad campaigns fast.

One time, I was chatting with an affiliate manager I knew personally. He told me that MaxBounty might be shaving commissions behind the scenes. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to think — I don’t specialize in running campaigns through networks, so I can’t say for sure. Take that info with a grain of salt.

Once your site is live, the next step is learning SEO. Just writing content isn’t enough — not if you want Google to rank your pages. You need to write well and understand how search engines work.

Inside each article, you can place affiliate links and start earning passive income through organic traffic. You can also run display ads to generate additional revenue. The main focus of your content? Product reviews and comparison articles.

Create Product Review Videos & Build Your Brand

You can create all kinds of videos — music, comedy, documentaries, news, and more — to earn money on YouTube. And yes, there are fast and simple ways to produce videos without ever showing your face.

That said, ad revenue from YouTube alone is usually quite low. A smarter strategy is to create product review videos and include your affiliate links. This way, when viewers buy through your links, your earnings can be significantly higher.

You can also run paid ads on YouTube. This is a more advanced method, but it has the potential to generate much greater profits.

Common Mistakes in Affiliate Marketing You Must Avoid

The online business world is full of traps — even more so than the real world. Because online laws are still catching up, many unethical marketers get away with shady behavior without facing any legal consequences.

This is basically littering the internet. And yes, I’ve done it myself. Back when I had no experience, I uploaded hundreds of low-effort videos to YouTube — and while some got views, none of them made real money.

When you publish bad content, you’re wasting your time. People won’t trust it, and without trust, there are no conversions. Ask yourself: would you buy from a low-quality blog post or video? Probably not.

Scams and Misleading Claims

Overhyping a product or making false promises just to increase sales? That’s called a “misleading claim.” And platforms like Google and Facebook are extremely sensitive to it — accounts get banned all the time.

This is especially common with shady health supplements. Some of them claim to cure chronic diseases that science can’t even solve — backed by video testimonials from so-called celebrities. 

But let’s be honest: they’re not doctors, and their opinions have no medical value.

Promoting Banned or Adult Products

Sure, these products are easy to sell and highly profitable. But promoting them means crossing serious ethical lines — contributing to moral decay, especially among younger audiences. 

I’m talking about sex toys, explicit media, and other trash I’d rather not name. That kind of business may bring fast money, but the karma hits hard — and it’s not worth it.

As for things like gambling, alcohol, and other vice-related offers — just stay away. Pretend they don’t even exist. The internet is a powerful tool, but it’s not always a beautiful place.

Even affiliate networks sometimes use clever tactics to bring in newbies, just to sell them products or shift business risks onto them. In some cases, networks may even skim commissions through backend systems.

On the affiliate side, some marketers deceive customers into buying poor-quality products that don’t live up to expectations. And then there are the countless SaaS companies out there selling “must-have” affiliate tools — many of which are overpriced, ineffective, and come with strict no-refund policies.

So let’s be clear: affiliate marketing itself is a legitimate business. No question. But like any business, it’s not immune to scams and shady players. Every industry has its traps — this one’s no different.

Don’t waste your time (or money) on sketchy online courses. Once you start exploring online business, you’ll see courses everywhere — all flashing screenshots, bold claims, and dramatic success stories. It’s easy to think making money online is “easy.”

But what you’re seeing is just the highlight reel. When someone shows off a successful campaign, chances are it’s 1 out of 10 — and the other 9 failures are conveniently left out of the story.
