Warning: Google’s AI Overviews are taking your traffic.
Not long ago, SEO felt relatively fair. You publish a helpful blog post, Google surfaces your content in search results, and in return, you get traffic.
for every 2 pages Google crawled, you could expect roughly 1 visit back to your site.
But things have started to shift.
Today, you need around 18 pages of content to earn just 1 visit.
Worse, about 75% of searches no longer lead users away from Google. People read answers generated by AI Overviews, and the original websites—the ones that created the content—get overlooked.
If you rely on content marketing—or any form of organic traffic—this is no longer just a warning.
It’s an alarm bell.
Your Traffic Is Being Taken by Google’s AI Overviews
Google used to be a reliable source of traffic for bloggers and SEO-driven marketers.
You create value—
Google shows it to users—and you get traffic in return.
But that model is quietly breaking down.
Let’s look at the numbers.
Ten years ago: Google crawled 2 pages → you got 1 visit back
Today: 18 pages → just 1 visit
In other words, getting a single visit from Google has become 9 times harder over the past decade.
Why?
Because more than 75% of search queries are now answered directly on the search results page. Users don’t need to click your link anymore.
They read a summarized answer generated by AI—what we now call AI Overviews—feel satisfied, and leave. Meanwhile, Google places ads right below that summary.
So Google is still monetizing your content.
But you’re no longer getting the traffic in return.
And that 75% isn’t the ceiling.
It’s projected to reach 90% in the near future—meaning 9 out of 10 users may never click on your site at all.
This is a clear signal that content marketing is entering a new era—one where your content is still being used, but no longer fairly rewarded.
OpenAI and the Future of Zero-Click Search
Google isn’t the only platform changing the game.
OpenAI—specifically ChatGPT—is quickly becoming the default “search engine” for many users.
And if you think Google is tough, the data from OpenAI might shock you even more.
Not long ago, OpenAI would process around 250 pages of content to generate an answer—and send back just 1 visit in return (source).
What about now?
That number has grown to 1,500 pages extracted for a single visit.
Users have become привыкшие to getting answers directly from AI.
- They don’t need to click.
- They don’t need to verify.
- They just want speed and convenience—and AI delivers that extremely well.
Which means: your content gets crushed, summarized, and served directly inside a chat interface—no links, no traffic, no affiliate clicks, no conversions.
If you’re in content marketing, SEO, affiliate marketing, or building a blog to make money, this is a survival-level problem.
Because when users stop clicking, the entire monetization model behind content starts to collapse.
If you’re a blogger (like me), you’re no longer just competing with other bloggers.
You’re competing directly with ChatGPT and Google AI—and they are your biggest competitors now.
We’re entering a phase where AI doesn’t just replace content writers—it disrupts the entire flow of organic traffic.
And you need to prepare for that—starting now.
Is There Still a Future for Bloggers and SEO?
If you rely on organic traffic to make a living, what I’m about to say won’t be easy to hear.
For the past 15 years, content marketing has been built on a simple principle: you create content, Google shows it, users click your link, and you get traffic to monetize.
That principle is now breaking down.
Today, users no longer visit websites to read the original article. They read AI-generated summaries directly on the search results page.
And when no one clicks:
- You lose ad revenue.
- No one reads your affiliate content.
- No one fills out forms, buys products, or joins your email list.
In short, your content is still being used—but you’re no longer getting paid for it.
And it’s not just happening on Google.
Social platforms are also limiting reach when you include external links.
Post a link on Facebook, and your reach drops significantly.
Why? Because platforms want to keep users inside—they don’t want them leaving.
The result is clear:
- SEO is getting harder.
- Social reach is shrinking.
- Everything is turning into a “closed ecosystem.”
In this environment, the traditional content marketing model is no longer a reliable growth channel.
And if you don’t adapt in time, it’s not just your traffic that will decline—your entire business can slow down with it.
Adapt or Fall Behind
When Google no longer sends users to your website, and AI summarizes everything without leaving a trace, the entire organic traffic-based marketing model starts to shake.
Naturally, many people will shift toward paid advertising.
But here’s the problem:
When everyone pours money into ads, click prices skyrocket. The game is no longer about who creates better content—it’s about who has deeper pockets.
If you want to keep acquiring customers, you have to adapt.
In my article on modern SEO strategy, I introduced a concept:
SEO = Search Everywhere Optimization
In other words, optimizing your presence across multiple platforms—not just Google.
You need to analyze your business, identify 1–3 key platforms where your audience actually spends time, and focus your content efforts there.
Start there—and build your strategy around it.
Don’t Panic — You Don’t Need to Do More
About 10 years ago, making money with SEO and affiliate marketing wasn’t easy. You had to research your niche deeply and spend hours writing high-quality content.
The writing process was slow, and it took a long time to build an authority site.
Today, that’s no longer the case.
AI can now write as well as—sometimes even better than—humans. With the right tools, one person can build a professional website much faster than before.
So in my view, the total effort required to earn traffic hasn’t really changed.
You still get what you deserve. The “reward” isn’t gone—it’s just shifting. The nature of the work is changing.
Final Thoughts
Google no longer “rewards” content the way it used to.
OpenAI can process thousands of pages to generate a single answer—and users never visit the original source.
Your content is now raw material for AI-generated summaries.
Platforms keep users inside. They place ads. They make money.
And you?
No traffic. No clicks. No conversions.
This isn’t just about declining traffic.
It’s the breakdown of an entire business model that millions of people rely on:
Write content → Rank → Get traffic → Make money.
If you’re doing affiliate marketing, SEO, selling digital products, or anything that depends on organic traffic—don’t wait.
The old way is fading.
Adapt now, and prepare for the new era of SEO— the era of Search Everywhere Optimization.
