Want to Rank for Competitive Keywords? Topical Authority Is the Only Way

Let’s say you want to rank for a high-competition keyword like “best crypto exchange.”

Here’s the hard truth:
You can’t just write one article and expect to crack the top 10.
Even if your site has hundreds of thousands of backlinks—it’s not enough.

Why? Because Google doesn’t just rank pages anymore.
It ranks experts. And to be seen as an expert, you need topical authority.

That means covering every relevant angle in your niche.
If you’re in crypto, you’d need content on:

  • How to set up a wallet
  • What blockchain is
  • Bitcoin vs. Ethereum
  • Exchange fees, security, regulations—and more

Once Google recognizes that you’ve covered the topic in full, that’s when the traffic floodgates open.

Let me give you a real example:
Healthline ranks #1 for “best protein powder.”
Guess how many articles they have with the word “protein” in the title?

Try this Google search command:
site:healthline.com intitle:protein
At the time of writing, it returns 495 results.
Yes, 495. That’s topical authority.

Which brings me to a critical point:
You’re not going to write 495 articles on your own.
This is where delegation and hiring become non-negotiable.

If you want to get started, 90% of the work begins with building a solid topical map—
a clear blueprint of all the articles you need to cover.
