The Topical Authority Step Most People Miss

Most people trying to build topical authority completely skip a key step:

If you’re truly an expert in a niche, shouldn’t you also know where the space is heading?

That means staying ahead of the curve—even before trends show up in keyword tools.

Here’s how to do that:

Explore Google Trends (the right way)

Search your core topic—let’s say “coffee roasting”.
Then filter by “Rising” instead of “Top.”
This reveals breakout topics—like “The Roasting Party”
that competitors probably haven’t even noticed.

These ideas won’t show up in traditional tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush
because they haven’t yet reached search volume thresholds.

Browse niche-specific subreddits

Look at the Hot posts in subreddits related to your niche.
You’ll often find discussions about new products, events, and ideas—like the Vienna Coffee Festival.

Then toss that topic into ChatGPT and prompt it to rewrite a review or coverage piece.
Now you’ve got timely, trend-aligned content.

Why does this matter?

Google’s recent Helpful Content Updates are brutal on sites that are overly monetized
or regurgitating the same old stuff.

  • Adding a Trends or News section to your site signals freshness
  • It shows you’re actively plugged into your niche—not just recycling evergreen posts
  • It builds authority and trust—because you’re covering what’s actually happening
