Don’t Just Seek Peace — Seek Flow

A lot of people are out there meditating, hoping to find peace.
But sometimes, the peace you’re looking for doesn’t come from stillness — it comes from immersion.

That’s what flow is.

Flow is that mental state where you’re fully focused, totally present, and performing at your best.
It’s not just productive — it’s deeply fulfilling.
And ironically, it’s one of the purest forms of inner peace.

Psychologist Owen Schaffer identified 7 conditions to enter flow:

  1. Know what to do
Have clear goals and a sense of purpose. Without direction, your mind will wander.
  2. Know how to do it
Ever left something on your to-do list for weeks? Chances are you didn’t know how to start. Break it down. Learn the skill. Clarity unlocks flow.
  3. Know how well you’re doing
Immediate feedback — even just internal cues — helps you adjust and stay on track. Without feedback, focus fades.
  4. Know where to go
You need to feel forward motion. Without a path, you get stuck in loops.
  5. Perceived challenge = perceived skill
Not too hard. Not too easy. The task should stretch you just enough to feel engaged — but not overwhelmed.
  6. Freedom from distractions
Silence the noise. Phone off. Notifications off. Flow doesn’t tolerate interruptions.
  7. Intrinsic motivation
You have to enjoy the process for its own sake. If it’s all for money, praise, or validation — flow won’t show up.

Don’t just chase stillness.
Chase the kind of work that consumes you in the best way.

That’s where fulfillment lives.
